Latvian Pavillion, Room 25

London Design Biennale 2018 (4 - 23 September)

This autumn Latvia will be taking part in the London Design Biennale 2018 (4-23 September) with interactive installation entitled ‘Matter to Matter’ by the designer Arturs Analts. Under the biennale’s theme of “Emotional States”, this project by the young Latvian designer reflects upon the rapid development of both modern technology and cities, and the importance of being aware of the interaction and impact on the environment and nature, which is so essential in Latvian culture. Project is implemented as a part of international programme of Latvia’s Centenary.

Latvians live in harmony with nature. 52% of the country is covered by forests which are surrounded by lakes, rivers and the Baltic Sea. The installation by Latvian designer Arthur Analts (Variant Studio), reflects on the Latvian relationship with nature with his use of materials, wood and water, and the sophisticated recreation of a natural process. The result is an interactive platform for the transition of matter to matter: gas to liquid. Latvia's interactive installation consists of a meditative space, in which visitors can explore the relationship between people and nature.

The installation serves to comment on Latvian design, architecture and technology in the 21st century. Design with a long-term focus will create socially responsible and environmentally friendly design, that can coexist with nature and its inhabitants.

A highlight on the global cultural design calendar, the London Design Biennale from 4 -23 September will see some of the world’s most exciting and ambitious designers, innovators and cultural bodies gather in the capital to celebrate the universal power of design and explore the role of design in our collective futures.
